I just watched this a few days ago. I was at that Library of Congress show in 2009, and I saw Jim arrive super early, I bet this interview is the reason why. I love his joke "I was born in Buffalo to be close to my mother" which seems lost on the interviewer.
I just saw Jim play in SF on Sunday with Greg Osby, Terry Clarke, and Steve LaSpina. Good show, they did a gorgeous "Chelsea Bridge" along with a bunch of tunes Jim plays every time.
Born in Elk Grove Village, IL. 1/2 Japanese, 1/4 Swedish, etc. Student at Indiana University. Playing piano and drums for a while. Bands/organizations past and present include the Onzai Duo/Trio, Laughter Has Long Legs, That Bitch Reptile, IMP, DBH, Xtet, and Munks.
